British folk singer Richard Thompson has criticised The X Factor, claiming its stars like Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke can’t sing and ‘lack musical intelligence’. Speaking to BBC’s Hardtalk programme, Thompson said X Factor contestants couldn’t actually sing songs, despite having good voices.

X Factor stars including winner’s and judges have dominated the list of the biggest selling singles of the past decade, with 2006 winner Leona Lewis featuring three times. This year’s winner Joe McElderry also manages to get onto the list despite his single only being available to buy for two weeks of the 10 years.
Despite being beaten to number 2 last week, Joe has climbed to take the last number 1 of the decade with close to 200,000 sales of his single The Climb. Rage Against The Machine held onto second place while Cheryl Cole’s new single entered the top 5.

X Factor judges Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell have come top 3 in a survey to find people’s favourite celebrity travel partners. A number of other X Factor stars – from both the present and past series – also received enough votes to put them in the top 13.
X Factor 2006 winner Leona Lewis has revealed she doesn’t think the show is about singing anymore, just entertainment. Speaking to News Of The World, Lewis complained talented vocalists had left the competition over poorer singers.
Sir Paul McCartney has described The X Factor as a road accident, saying “you don’t want to see it, but you do. “The former Beatle, who is tipped to perform on the live final in two weeks time, added that twins Jedward “were watchable” and he was surprised to see them kicked out last Sunday.
The X Factor finalists are set to top the official UK charts this weekend after selling some 118,000 copies of their charity single, a cover of Michael Jackson’s You Are Not Alone already this week. The single sold over 80,000 copies in its first two days alone.
2006 winner Leona Lewis has said that The X Factor is now “all pantomime” with the likes of John and Edward continuing to stay in the contest Leona added that she felt it was “more about the music” when she took part in series 3.
